Holy crap check this out. I was penalized 6k in 2007 despite overpaying by 2k, because TurboTax did not transmit the money on the 14th of April, even though I got a successful transmission message after clicking the button. I was notified after the deadline, by the IRS, that they never got my payment. So I hired a tax lady, who wrote me a nice letter and attached some screen shots of my TurboTax account showing I paid on time and it was a software problem. So I thought I cleaned up last year’s problem. I was stoked!
I literally just licked the envelope to send off the correspondence to the IRS about the 2007 problem, and continued to tend to my bills. In the pile, there was another letter from the IRS. This one says I owe almost 18k for my 2006 taxes. Because apparently, TurboTax did the same thing that year. But the IRS waited almost 2 years so they could add an additional 6k in penalties and interest.
So now, out of the blue, I am 22k in the hole with the government. And I swear I paid that 12k, I remember it clear as day. In 2006 I found out the transmission did not go through and sent them a check. Bank of America said they cannot find the check, but I remember it plain as day. Plus both years, I was paying my taxes the whole time. But of course, the IRS can always figure out ways to squeeze a little extra out of a brotha.
I called the IRS, and they basically said I am S.O.L. and any problems I have had with software have nothing to do with the bottom line, which is, I owe them 22k right now. And as for Bank of America, it’s not like I backed up my transaction logs, so I depend on their system to pull data when needed.
I’m no conspiracy theorist, but how the heck did both B of A and the IRS lose record of that transaction? And how can The IRS justify waiting until 6k in interest and penalties is accrued to inform me about the 2006 problem? And how can they justify penalizing me 6k for OVERPAYING my taxes by thousands of dollars just a few weeks late? Especially considering I TRIED to pay on time and the software was to blame?
This is how.
The government totally sucks you motherfucker.

Wow, that sucks! Don´t you have any documents (bank statements) showing that you have paid your taxes on time?

If you haven’t already cut them a check, contact Robert E. Ward and Associates in Bethesda, Maryland, and tell them Tinu sent you. They’re awesome at getting this kind of mess straightened out — and hooking you up so mistakes like these don’t happen in the future. Sorry to hear about this.

Hi Bob,
When I filed my taxes with TurboTax, at the very end it gave me the option to pay my taxes via wire transfer. I chose the date for the transaction to occur (April 4 I believe) and filed my taxes. Now, I had problems in the return that needed to be fixed according to the software, but there was an option to pay anyway, through the system. I chose that option. The following screen gave me a success message. My payment was scheduled. Then, I proceeded to fix up the errors in my return.
As far as I knew, from what the software told me, I had successfully paid my taxes and filed my return. Two days later (April 16th) I got an email that my return was received on the 14th. Later that day, I got the rejection notice. I called the IRS and they said since I had this error that I would not be penalized, and I just had to paper file. A few days later, they called me looking for my money. I wrote the check, put it in my company’s outbound mail box, and breathed a sigh of relief. They said they were not going to penalize me.
But somehow, the check must have gotten lost in the company mail or something. So it was a comedy of errors. First by TurboTax with the confirmation message that my payment was scheduled, then by me on my tax return, then somewhere between my company mail box to the US Treasury.
And now, I am screwed out of thousands of dollars.

So you have an extra $12k in the bank and it’s been there all along, right?? I mean, if they didn’t get it then you must have it.. Seems logical to me :)

It dont matter the IRS is corrupt and ruin the lives of many people.
They can flasify records and if you mess with them they will make you out to look like a fraud in court, but if anyone has the patience to get their tax audit records and some other stuff it will prove in court that the taxman has assign fraudulent liability to 80% of americans.
Point is, there is no law saying we have to pay income tax, only the rickest 1% has to pay and guess what, they are the 1% that writes the laws and loopholes to make it so they dont have to pay, so what we have is a tax just becasue your not in the 1% elite dick head club

I have had some experience in situations similar to the ones described above. When it comes down to it, the IRS always has the upper hand against individual taxpayers. The only way to solve this is to hire an experienced tax attorney who knows how to handle situations exactly like this. It may cost a little money up front, but when dealing with debt to the IRS this large, it is completely worth it, as opposed to tens of thousands of dollars.

Whoa, that really sucks. I agree that best way is to hire some tax attorney to get IRS off your back. Writing nice letter to IRS do not work! They simply will just ignore it especially if the amount is large as in your situation.

Funny story .. a friend told me how they mistakenly sent their income tax check for federal to the state. The state cashed it! It was written to the IRS! and they are still trying to get it back.

The bottom line is the IRS is a socialist instrument to bilk people out of their hard earned money so that the new aristocracy of America can go on all the good will missions and bullshit that the communist fuckers that have infiltrated our society want to. Democrats are fucking STUPID assholes that need to be taken out, and so do all the fucking big governmnet jerks. I don’t want the government messing in my life ” I’m the one that has to die when it’s time for me to die so let me live my life the way I want to” (Jimmie Hendrix) Isn’t it funny how when slavery was alive and well the democrats were all slave holders and now they are the best friends a brother can have…….

Well I’m having the same problem…They sent me a notice letter yesterday saying i owe them $347 from 2007…Ok where the hell have them been for 4 yrs. Not to mention first it says $200 and they added on taxes and penalties and I just got the notice… How can the IRS get away with this shit. Send the bill for $200 and if not paid on time then accrue the taxes and penalties…AND the letter says i can call this number to dispute the bill..yeah right – all automated and nothing that has anything to do with talking to a REP about the problem…I hate the IRS!

The situation you describe is f*&*ed up.. It’s funny, ’cause when you have to pay they always know where to find you and they want it fast, but if they have to return money to you they’re not in that much of a hurry.

I just received a letter from the IRS Gangsters a few weeks ago. Seems as though they found an error in our 2009 taxes, also done with Turbo tax. A 1600.00 error. :-/ Makes me totally ill to think these *** holes put us close to 16 trillion dollars in debt, and their putting everyone else under the microscope trying to squeeze every nickle and dime they can get. The government is 100% useless. They cannot run nor manage anything.. AT ALL..

After trying TurboTax last year I wasn’t too happy with it. And from what you’re saying it’s clearly got more issues than I thought.
